The School-Based Mental Health Program serves youth who are vulnerable to school failure due to personal, family, social-emotional, academic and environmental challenges by addressing non-academic issues that interfere with school success.
Our mission is to support youth and families in maximizing their potential and enhancing their wellness in the natural environments of school, family and community through advocacy, mental health services and education. This provides better access to services, less time away from school for community appointments and the ability to collaborate more fully with teachers, guidance counselors and administrators.
Participants in the School-Based Mental Health Program are identified and referred for a variety of reasons, including: emotional distress, difficulty managing academic expectations, family difficulties/separations, attention deficit/hyperactivity, depression, anxiety, trauma and loss.
OVERVIEW OF SERVICES
- Diagnostic Assessment: Comprehensive evaluation to determine mental health needs, establish treatment goals and provide referrals as needed.
- Individual, Family and Group Therapy: Specializes in the mental health needs of school-aged children; designed to promote the healthy development of communication, social coping and anger management skills.
- Community Support: Improves child and family knowledge of and access to community-based resources and services that will enhance family and child functioning and quality of life.
- Consultation: Collaboration with community service providers, educators and policy makers on the unique educational, developmental and social-emotional needs of th child and adolescent populations.
- Education: Enhancement in the understanding of mental health diagnosis and treatment, educational programming and interventions and the impact of social emotional difficulties on academic success and personal development.
Mental Health Services Vision
WCESC-MHS envisions a community in which students have access to mental health services regardless of school placements and are able to develop skills to breed resiliency within themselves and educate others.
Mental Health Services Mission
The Mental Health Team provides comprehensive support systems to our programs, districts and within the community that promote education and awareness of mental health. By working on interdisciplinary teams and within a PBIS framework, mental health staff seek to find effective evidence-based practices that are applicable to our diverse student population
Referrals are made through the administration and school counseling offices of the child’s or adolescent’s home school district, or directly by families, students or other community based providers.
